Many of the Ohio postcards in our collection from the 1900's and 1910's were sent to Geraldine Bigler and her family in Bluffton.
Our staff does not know the Bigler family, but here is what we were able to find out.
Geraldine Bigler was born to Otto and Elesa Dell Bigler on July 27th, 1903 in Bluffton, Ohio and died in Bluffton, Ohio on October 25th, 1938 at the age of 35. She was buried locally in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
Geraldine had four younger siblings, Elmon Otto (1907-1997), Neva A. (1909-1975), Eugene E. (1912-?), and Carol Janet (1917-1996).
Her mother passed away in 1944 and her father in 1949.
The postcards in our collection that were addressed to Geraldine were sent to her on special occasions including birthdays, Easter, Christmas, and Thanksgiving from age 4 to age 14 (1908 to 1917). Many of these, especially the earlier, don't contain a message. Geraldine probably enjoyed receiving these postcards and encouraged friends and relatives to send them on any suitable occasion.
We also have some postcards in our collection that were addressed to Otto and Mrs. Otto Bigler (Elesa), Geraldine's brother Elmon, and her sister Neva.
These postcards were sent before the creation of postal zones or the ZIP code and before street addresses were in common use, so many of the addresses read "city" or just "Bluffton, Ohio"
